Nablus University Participates in the Fourth Administrative Meeting of the "FLAVEaT" Project in Portugal

Nablus University for Vocational and Technical Education participated in the fourth administrative meeting of the "Food Legislation in Vocational Education and Training" (FLAVEaT) project, held in Porto, Portugal, as part of the Erasmus+ program funded by the European Union. The university was represented by its president, Prof. Derar Eleyan, and the project manager, Dr. Samer Jarrar.

The meeting included representatives from all partner universities and institutions involved in the project, including Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Al-Balqa Applied University (Jordan), the Creative Thinking Development Center (CRETHIDEV) from Greece, the Virtual Campus Academy (VC) from Portugal, the Teramo Institute for Applied Animal Health Research (IZS) from Italy, and the AINIA Technology Center in Valencia, Spain.

During the meeting, participants discussed the various work packages within the project and the roles assigned to each partner. These include project management tasks, preparations for different activities, the design of specialized courses in food legislation, ensuring project quality and implementation, promoting and disseminating project outcomes, and capacity building and technology transfer.

Prof. Eleyan delivered a presentation on Nablus University, highlighting its philosophy, future plans, and ongoing projects, including three Erasmus+ projects. He also outlined the university’s involvement in the French-funded project by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) to establish and equip the College of Health Professions, and the German-funded KFW project, aimed at developing a research, training, and industrial networking center.

Prof. Eleyan emphasized the importance of the FLAVEaT project and its alignment with the university’s strategy to develop academic programs and strengthen partnerships with local, regional, and international institutions.

Dr. Jarrar presented the laboratory needs required by the university and the technical and methodological framework for designing specialized courses as part of the FLAVEaT project. These courses aim to enhance new programs within the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Natural Resources. He stressed the importance of focusing project activities on international standards for food safety, aligning them with local legislation in the partner countries, and leveraging the expertise of European centers in this field.

The meeting concluded with agreements on the tasks and activities to be completed in the coming year. These include:

  • Finalizing the document on best practices in food safety and legislation.
  • Organizing focus group meetings in Jordan and Palestine with food sector stakeholders to gather feedback for course development.
  • Designing a framework and content for the specialized courses based on the collected feedback.
  • Preparing training sessions for researchers from Jordan and Palestine to be held in Spain and Italy.

It is worth noting that the FLAVEaT project is part of the Erasmus+ program, focusing on food safety, legislation, reducing food waste, and recycling through modern quality control and food safety technologies. The project involves developing four educational and training courses, organizing research and training visits for specialists in the field, and spans three years.
